It was equipped with the Canadian-built Orenda engine which enhanced altitude performace and climb rate over the previous versions while retaining excellent low-speed characteristics. It was considered to be the best production Sabres ever built. The Canadian public best remembers the Sabre as the aircraft of the RCAF Golden Hawks aerobatic flying team, which performed dazzling aerial displays in the 1960s. Initially a six-plane team flying the brilliantly-painted metallic-gold Canadair Sabres were supposed to perform for one year, but the Golden Hawks were so popular after their initial 1970 season that the team was expanded. The Golden Hawks continued performing for three more seasons until they were disbanded in 1964, having flown a total of 317 shows accross North America. Canadair Sabre 6 #23651 is on displat at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, Ontario. Junkers Ju 87 StukaPostage Stamp CollectionThe Junkers JU 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft used during World War II. With its distinctive gull wings, spatted undercarriage and mounted wailing sirens, dubbed the "Jericho Trumpet", the Stuka was instrumental in the early blitzkrieg victories of the war and became a symbol of German air-power. The Stuka had a 2-man crew that would drop bombs with astonishing accuracy. They had innovative dive brakes to slow the dive and give the pilot more time to aim his bomb, with automatic pull-up in case of g-induced blackout. Although the Stukas were very effective against ground and naval targets and were used throughout the war, they proved no match against faster enemy fighters. YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. B-1B Lancer - Boss Hawg - USAF Postage Stamp Collection The Rockwell International (now Boeing) B-1B Lancer is a four-engine, supersonic, swing wing, jet powered, heavy strategic bomber. Used by the United States Air Force, it is primarily a low-level penetrator. The B-1B has long range capability and travels at high altitude with speed of Mach 1.25, and at low level speed of Mach 0.92. The B-1B celebrated its first flight on December 23, 1974 and became operational in 1986 with USAF Strategic Air Command as a nuclear bomber. In early 1990s B-1B fleet was reassigned to Air Combat Command and aircrafts were converted to use conventional and all-weather guided “smart” munitions. Its first combat mission occurred in 1998 during Operation “Desert Fox” in Iraq. In 1999 it was again deployed to support Operation “Allied Force” in Kosovo. Commonly called the “Bone”, derived from “B-One”, the B-1B holds 61 world records for speed, payload and distance. And while inventory of the B1-B was reduced from 91 aircraft, 67 still remain in service, and are expected to continue service until 2030. Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.
