Northrup P61 Black Widow - "Lady in the Dark"Postage Stamp CollectionThe Northrup P61 Black Widow is a twin-engine, twin-boom fighter aircraft manufactured by Northrup Corporation. It was used by United States Army Air Forces USAAF squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945. Developed to United States Army Air Corps specifications, the P-38J had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle bearing the pilot and armament. The P-38J was a formidable fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft and was also used extensively as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's greatest assets were her twin engines, long range, heavy payload, high speed, fast climb and concentrated firepower. The P-38J 23 Skidoo is one of the few Lightings in flying condition. It was restored in July, 1988 with markings of WWII Capt. Perry Dahl's Lightning while he was fighting in the Pacific front. 23 Skidoo is a saying from the 1920s, which refers to "getting out while the getting's good". It is currently based out of the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.

NASA Lockheed YF-12Postage Stamp CollectionThe YF-12 was an experimental fighter-interceptor version of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft. YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft.
