During this time, Cadillac began trimming its vehicle lineup, slowly phasing out the lower-end models and the super-luxurious V16 monsters. The consolidation of brands and models was a wise move to survive WWII. The war took its toll on the entire car industry, and Cadillac was no exception. By 1947, Cadillac was only producing 12 models under 4 different series—nearly a quarter of their output from just 6 years earlier. As WWII ended and Americans returned to work, people ordered new cars by the thousands. From 1946 into 1947, there were over 100,000 unfulfilled orders. Boeing CH-47C Chinook AE-520 - Falklands War 1982 When an Argentinean scrap metal salvage team landed at a derelict whaling station on South Georgia in March 1982 and immediately ran up an Argentinean flag, little did they know that this relatively innocuous incident would spark one of the most serious international military confrontations of the postwar years.A small British military force aboard HMS Endurance was dispatched from Port Stanley to remove the Argentinians, a move which would escalate the situation dramatically. On receipt of this information, the new political regime in Buenos Aires, keen to bolster nationalist fervour in the country, immediately put full invasion plans in place and on the morning of 2nd April 1982, a small force of commando troops landed on the Islands to be followed by a much larger amphibious force, far stronger than was needed to achieve their objective.Despite the valiant efforts of the small force of Royal Marines troops based on the Island, the Governor ordered them to cease firing at 09.25, fearing the intense fighting would put the lives of civilians at risk. With Argentinean forces now in control of the Islands, the task of moving in more troops, supplies and heavier equipment began in earnest, as military planners and government officials awaited the British response.They were hoping that possession of the Islands would give them a significant advantage and that a positive resolution for Argentina could be negotiated without the need for conflict, however, by the following day, they had their answer and knew what they would be facing. One notable exceptionto this rule were RAF No.45 Squadron,who replaced their wartime Mosquitoes with the Beaufighter TF.X fighter bomber, before moving out to operate from a new base in Ceylon. In August 1948, the squadron moved to Kuala Lumpur in response to the Malayan Emergency, where it would take part in the combined Commonwealth actions to quell the guerrilla activities of the Communist backed Malayan National Liberation Army. Using the legendary range and hard hitting attributes of this capable heavy fighter, the unit’sBeaufighters would loiter over the jungle, waiting to unleash a withering barrage of rocket and cannon fireon enemy positions, once given targeting instructions from Commonwealth troops patrolling in the vicinity. Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.
