Hurst's Shifty Doctor, Jack Watson, helped prepare the Smothers' car. With a cameraman and equipment on board, Dick netted a 12.99 on his third pass in the car. George Berejik received a call from the Smothers brothers' lawyer prior to the 1971 NHRA Nationals, telling him that he had been dropped by the Smothers and that the Smothers name and logo had to come off the car. The Berejik team went to Indy and paid $600 to have the name and logo removed. They finally got to the gates, where the Smothers were waiting and told them that the lawyer was misinformed and to get the lettering back on the car. Berejik then spent $700 to have the name repainted! The Smothers deal lasted until the end of the 1971 season, when Oldsmobile pulled the plug. Loyed "Woody" Woodland, seen here running F/SA at Maple Grove, banged off 11.60s on a 12.20 F/S record!

In this case, no political figure was stepping down but rather Pontiac's sportster of the same name. "He wanted one his whole life but couldn't swing it financially,' recalls his wife, Mary. "Realizing this would be his last chance to get one, he figured he should get moving." In April of 1971, the lovebirds swung by Hansord Pontiac, in Minneapolis, only to be greeted with a terrible announcement: they were too late. "The sales staff said sadly we had missed the boat in getting in an order,' recalls Mary. Officially, the Judge was discontinued in February and here it was nearly a month later. "We told them we weren't interested anymore and started to leave,' said Mary. "Before we could get to the door, they said they would call up Pontiac and ask if they'll make one more." He wanted to turn Ford's secretary sports car into a track champion. So, Ford sent him three white K-code 1965 Mustangs. Serial number 5R002 would become the very first GT350R prototype and is arguably the most important Mustang in history! 5R002 would have multiple parts tested on it with drivers such as Ken Miles and Bob Bondurant behind the wheel, fenders widened by hand, the famous rear window designed by Peter Brock that let air escape, reverse hood scoop, and so much more! 5R002, aka the "Flying Mustang", would win its first race it ever entered on February 14,1965 with Ken Miles piloting the car to victory. Miles and others would compile 10 wins with 5R002 throughout the season with Jerry Titus capturing the SCCA B Production Championship for 1965!

He is known as "Big Daddy" to drag racing fans around the world. Always a pioneer in the field of drag racing, he perfected the rear-engine "top fuel dragster design", an innovation motivated by the loss of part of his foot in a dragster accident. This design was notably safer, since it put most of the fuel processing and rotating parts of the dragster behind the driver. The driver was placed in "clear air," in front of nearly all the mechanical components, thus protecting the driver and allowing him to activate a variety of safety equipment in the event of catastrophic mechanical failure or a fire. Garlits was also an early promoter of the full-body, fire-resistant driver's suit - complete with socks and gloves, often branded as Nomex. Garlits was the first drag racer to officially surpass the 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, and 270 miles per hour marks in the quarter mile; he was also the first to top 200 in the 1/8 mile. He has been inducted into several Halls of Fame and has won many awards during his career.
