With a top speed of Mach 1.8, it was the first modern jet intended for both land and air duties. It is a superb war plane with the primary missions of fleet air defense, fighter escort, intercept, combat air patrol, suppression of enemy air defense, air interdiction and close air support, among others. The VFA-131 “Wildcats” squadron is based in Virginia, its mission is to project power, both ashore and at sea, and to defend the fleet against any and all threats.

F-104 Starfighter, 479th Tactical Fighter Wing, USAFPostage Stamp CollectionThe Lockheed F-104 Starfighter® is a single-engine, supersonic high-altitude fighter aircraft. It was originally developed for the US Air Force, but later was operated by the armed forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004. The F-104 was designed with a unique set of extremely thin trapezoidal wings and was the first combat aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight. It set numerous world records, including both airspeed and altitude records, and was the first aircraft to have held both records simultaneously.Aircraft 56-901 served with the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. This aircraft set the altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C reaching 92,000 feet at a speed of 2.5 Mach while stationed in Hahn Germany with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1962.Aircraft 56-901 is currently on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT.

Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey - USAFPostage Stamp CollectionDie-cast metal model with plastic stand The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a multi-mission military tilt-rotor aircraft, with both a vertical takeoff and landing and short takeoff and landing capabilities. The aircraft was designed to meet the needs of the Defense Department's four U.S. armed services. The V-22 takes off and lands like a helicopter, but once airborne its engine can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane, capable of high-speed and high-altitude flight.This die-cast metal model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 4 5/8 inches long with 3 3/4 inch wingspan, 2 1/2 rotor diameter (each). Model can be displayed in cruise mode , VTOL mode or in transition. Total model width is 6 inches.

Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.
