Supermarine Spitfire MK. II RAF - Battle of BritainPostage Stamp CollectionThe Supermarine Spitfire is a single-seat fighter aircraft used by the RAF and many Allied countries during World War II. Designed by R.J. Mitchell and produced by Supermarine, the Spitfire was designed with remarkably thin elliptical wings with the thinnest possible cross-section, which enabled it to travel at speeds that exceeded those of other aircraft fighters of its time. Equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and 8 x 0.303" Browning machine guns, the Spitfire was a fast and maneuverable fighter and was the only fighter aircraft to be in continual production and development before, during and after the war.During the Battle of Britain, which was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces, the Spitfire was part of an important battle tactic, where the Spitfire squadrons were sent up to engage the German fighter escorts, leaving the Hurricane to attack the German bombers. The spitfire Mk IIa, serial P7966 D-B "Manxman" was the aircraft of Wing Commander Douglas Bader, a RAF Fighter Ace, when he started leading the Tangmere Wing in March of 1941. The P7966 was one of the first to carry CO Bader's initials on the fuselage instead of standard code markings. Gruman F4F WildcatPostage Stamp CollectionThe Grumman F4F Wildcat is a carrier-based aircraft that was the primary fighter used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during the early part of World War II. With a top speed of 318 mph (F4F-4 variant), the Wildcat was generally outperformed by the faster, more maneuverable, and longer-ranged Japanese A6M Zero, but the Wildcat held its own with excellent survivability due to its rugged construction and robust armor.The F4F-4 entered service in 1941 with 6 machine-guns and the folding-wing system that enabled more planes to be stored in an aircraft carrier. It was the definitive Wildcat that saw the most combat service, including the Battle of Midway. The model is approximately 4 inches in length and has a 5 inch wingspan.

A-1H Skyraider - US Navy - Papoose Flight Postage Stamp CollectionThe Douglas A-1 Skyraider is a piston-powered, propeller driven military attack aircraft that was operated by the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force untill the early 1970s. The A-1 Skyraider had excellent low-speed maneuverability and carried a large amount of ordnance with long loiter capabilities that made it competitive against jet-powered airplanes.Lt. j.g. W. Thomas Patton was part of four VA-176 Skyraiders that launched off from USS Intrepid flying as "Papoose Flight". On October 9, 1966 as part of a search and rescue mission they encountered four North Vietnamese MiG-17 jet fighters. Using low-speed maneuverability and their four 20mm cannon effectively, they were credited with one MiG-17 destroyed by Patton's A-1H Skyraider "Papoose 409", and two others destroyed or damaged by his squadron mates.

Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.

Curtiss JN4 "Jenny" - USAASPostage Stamp CollectionDie-cast model with a plastic stand The JN-4 "Jenny" was a single-engine, 2-seater biplane built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company as a training aircraft for the US Army. Curtiss combined the best features of the model J and model N trainers, and developed the JN or "Jenny". It was widely used during World War I to train beginning pilots, but its more significant role in aviation history was as a barnstorming and mail-carrying airplane in the 1920s.Thousands of Jennys were sold at surplus prices to private owners in the years after the war and helped awaken the US to civil aviation through much of the 1920s. The Smithsonian acquired this Jenny in 1918 directly from the U.S. War Department. It is currently on static display at National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia
