Junkers Ju 87 StukaPostage Stamp CollectionThe Junkers JU 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft used during World War II. With its distinctive gull wings, spatted undercarriage and mounted wailing sirens, dubbed the "Jericho Trumpet", the Stuka was instrumental in the early blitzkrieg victories of the war and became a symbol of German air-power. The Stuka had a 2-man crew that would drop bombs with astonishing accuracy. They had innovative dive brakes to slow the dive and give the pilot more time to aim his bomb, with automatic pull-up in case of g-induced blackout. Although the Stukas were very effective against ground and naval targets and were used throughout the war, they proved no match against faster enemy fighters. This JU 87 was used mainly as a low-altitude ground attack aircraft towards the end of the war and surrendered at Furth in May, 1945

With a top speed of 318 mph (F4F-4 variant), the Wildcat was generally outperformed by the faster, more maneuverable, and longer-ranged Japanese A6M Zero, but the Wildcat held its own with excellent survivability due to its rugged construction and robust armor.The F4F-4 entered service in 1941 with 6 machine-guns and the folding-wing system that enabled more planes to be stored in an aircraft carrier. Its excellent capabilities and performance made it very successful for the USMC. The F4U had a long production life span and was last produced in 1952. It had a max speed of 417 mph and carried six .50 caliber machine guns or four 20mm cannons, as well as a pair of 2000 lb. bombs and air rockets.F4U aircraft #86 was piloted by Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, Commanding Officer of the VMF-214 "Black Sheep" Squadron who fought their way to fame in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Flying out of their home airfield out of Vella Lavella, the "Black Sheep" piled up a record 203 planes destroyed or damaged, troop transports and supply ships sunk, and ground installations destroyed in their first 84 days. Boyington himself claims a record 28 total kills. He was shot down on January 3, 1944 and was a prisoner of war for 20 months until the Japanese surrender. He was awarded both the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross on October, 1945. The mid-1970s television show "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was very loosely based on his memoirs.

The A-1 Skyraider had excellent low-speed maneuverability and carried a large amount of ordnance with long loiter capabilities that made it competitive against jet-powered airplanes.Lt. j.g. W. Thomas Patton was part of four VA-176 Skyraiders that launched off from USS Intrepid flying as "Papoose Flight". On October 9, 1966 as part of a search and rescue mission they encountered four North Vietnamese MiG-17 jet fighters. Using low-speed maneuverability and their four 20mm cannon effectively, they were credited with one MiG-17 destroyed by Patton's A-1H Skyraider "Papoose 409", and two others destroyed or damaged by his squadron mates.

YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. B-1B Lancer - Boss Hawg - USAF Postage Stamp Collection The Rockwell International (now Boeing) B-1B Lancer is a four-engine, supersonic, swing wing, jet powered, heavy strategic bomber. Used by the United States Air Force, it is primarily a low-level penetrator. The B-1B has long range capability and travels at high altitude with speed of Mach 1.25, and at low level speed of Mach 0.92. The B-1B celebrated its first flight on December 23, 1974 and became operational in 1986 with USAF Strategic Air Command as a nuclear bomber. In early 1990s B-1B fleet was reassigned to Air Combat Command and aircrafts were converted to use conventional and all-weather guided “smart” munitions. Its first combat mission occurred in 1998 during Operation “Desert Fox” in Iraq. In 1999 it was again deployed to support Operation “Allied Force” in Kosovo. Commonly called the “Bone”, derived from “B-One”, the B-1B holds 61 world records for speed, payload and distance. And while inventory of the B1-B was reduced from 91 aircraft, 67 still remain in service, and are expected to continue service until 2030. Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.

UH-1 US Army Huey Medevac Postage Stamp CollectionDie-cast model with plastic display stand Developed by Bell Helicopter, the “Huey” was nicknamed after the phonetic sound of its original designation, the HU-1 Iroquois. In 1962 the designation was changed to UH-1, but “Huey” remained and became so popular that Bell began casting the name on the helicopter’s anti-torque pedals. The Huey was developed in 1952 in order to meet the United States Army’s requirement for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter. With its first flight on October 20, 1956, the Huey began arriving in Vietnam in 1963. Used for MEDEVAC, command and control, and air assault, Hueys became, more than any other aircraft, a symbol of the Vietnam War. The Huey’s ability to carry patients inside the aircraft was a key element in the reduction of mortality and morbidity. Medical personnel could begin treatment during the flight to a field hospital, reducing the average delay until treatment to one hour, helping to reduce the mortality rate to 1 death per 100 casualties. With the unmistakable sound of its blades, the sound of an approaching Huey was said by those that served in Vietnam to be the sound of rescue, the sound of freedom and the sound of going home.
