Lockheed P-38J Lightning "23 Skidoo"Postage Stamp CollectionDie-cast metal plane with plastic standThe Lockheed P-38J Lightning was an American fighter aircraft used by the US Air Force during World War II. Developed to United States Army Air Corps specifications, the P-38J had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle bearing the pilot and armament. The P-38J was a formidable fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft and was also used extensively as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's greatest assets were her twin engines, long range, heavy payload, high speed, fast climb and concentrated firepower. The P-38J 23 Skidoo is one of the few Lightings in flying condition. It was restored in July, 1988 with markings of WWII Capt. Perry Dahl's Lightning while he was fighting in the Pacific front. 23 Skidoo is a saying from the 1920s, which refers to "getting out while the getting's good". It is currently based out of the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.

It was originally developed for the US Air Force, but later was operated by the armed forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004. The F-104 was designed with a unique set of extremely thin trapezoidal wings and was the first combat aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight. It set numerous world records, including both airspeed and altitude records, and was the first aircraft to have held both records simultaneously.Aircraft 56-901 served with the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. This aircraft set the altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C reaching 92,000 feet at a speed of 2.5 Mach while stationed in Hahn Germany with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1962.Aircraft 56-901 is currently on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT.

It is a two-seat twinjet long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy. After joining the war in 1944, the Nine-O-Nine completed 132 consecutive missions without aborting for mechanical reasons or loss of crew, believed to be a record. In all she flew 1,129 hours and dropped 562,000 pounds of bombs before returning to the US at the end of hostilities.The Collings Foundation currently operates a fully restored and operational B-17G in "Nine-O-Nine" colors, in honor of the veterans of the World War II. B-1B Lancer - Boss Hawg - USAF Postage Stamp Collection The Rockwell International (now Boeing) B-1B Lancer is a four-engine, supersonic, swing wing, jet powered, heavy strategic bomber. Used by the United States Air Force, it is primarily a low-level penetrator. The B-1B has long range capability and travels at high altitude with speed of Mach 1.25, and at low level speed of Mach 0.92. The B-1B celebrated its first flight on December 23, 1974 and became operational in 1986 with USAF Strategic Air Command as a nuclear bomber. In early 1990s B-1B fleet was reassigned to Air Combat Command and aircrafts were converted to use conventional and all-weather guided “smart” munitions. Its first combat mission occurred in 1998 during Operation “Desert Fox” in Iraq. In 1999 it was again deployed to support Operation “Allied Force” in Kosovo. Commonly called the “Bone”, derived from “B-One”, the B-1B holds 61 world records for speed, payload and distance. And while inventory of the B1-B was reduced from 91 aircraft, 67 still remain in service, and are expected to continue service until 2030. It is now displayed at the National World War II Museum in Louisiana.

Called to service in 1942, the aircraft took heavy losses in its early days, but was still one of the most successful medium-range bombers used by the US Army Air Forces and her Allies.The B-26 Flak Bait was assigned to the 322nd Bombardment Group in England and had lived up to its name: it has been shot with over 1,000 holes, returned twice on one engine and once with an engine on fire, lost its electrical system once and its hydraulic system twice. Nevertheless, it survived 207 operational missions over Europe, more than any other American aircraft during World War II. It is currently undergoing restoration at the National Air and Space Museum.

Curtiss JN4 "Jenny" - USAASPostage Stamp CollectionDie-cast model with a plastic stand The JN-4 "Jenny" was a single-engine, 2-seater biplane built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company as a training aircraft for the US Army. Curtiss combined the best features of the model J and model N trainers, and developed the JN or "Jenny". It was widely used during World War I to train beginning pilots, but its more significant role in aviation history was as a barnstorming and mail-carrying airplane in the 1920s.Thousands of Jennys were sold at surplus prices to private owners in the years after the war and helped awaken the US to civil aviation through much of the 1920s. The Smithsonian acquired this Jenny in 1918 directly from the U.S. War Department. It is currently on static display at National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia
