The flathead V8 was upped to 255 CID and now producing 110 horsepower—slightly more power than the also newly designed 1949 Ford Coupe. Developed to a United States Army Air Corps requirement, the P-38 had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle containing the pilot and armament. The aircraft was used in a number of different roles, including interception, dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing, close air support, photo reconnaissance missions, and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with external drop tanks.Piloted by Richard Ira “Dick” Bong, he was the United States highest scoring air ace during World War II. Credited for having shot down 40 Japanese aircraft, he was the recipient of the Medal of Honor for all his aerial victories in the P-38J Lightning.

Lockheed P-38J Lightning "23 Skidoo"Postage Stamp CollectionDie-cast metal plane with plastic standThe Lockheed P-38J Lightning was an American fighter aircraft used by the US Air Force during World War II. Developed to United States Army Air Corps specifications, the P-38J had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle bearing the pilot and armament. The P-38J was a formidable fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft and was also used extensively as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's greatest assets were her twin engines, long range, heavy payload, high speed, fast climb and concentrated firepower. The P-38J 23 Skidoo is one of the few Lightings in flying condition. It was restored in July, 1988 with markings of WWII Capt. Perry Dahl's Lightning while he was fighting in the Pacific front. 23 Skidoo is a saying from the 1920s, which refers to "getting out while the getting's good". It is currently based out of the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.

It was originally developed for the US Air Force, but later was operated by the armed forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004. The F-104 was designed with a unique set of extremely thin trapezoidal wings and was the first combat aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight. It set numerous world records, including both airspeed and altitude records, and was the first aircraft to have held both records simultaneously.Aircraft 56-901 served with the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. This aircraft set the altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C reaching 92,000 feet at a speed of 2.5 Mach while stationed in Hahn Germany with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1962.Aircraft 56-901 is currently on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT.

NASA Lockheed YF-12Postage Stamp CollectionThe YF-12 was an experimental fighter-interceptor version of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft. YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. It was, however, a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane.The only YF-12 left in existence is currently displayed at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.This die-cast metal model comes in 1:200 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 6 3/16 inches long with 3 3/16 inch wingspan.
