Westland Lysander MkIIIA, RAF No. 161 Sqn n the months leading up to and just after D-Day, the Westland Lysanders of RAF No.161 Squadron made a significant, yet largely unheralded contribution towards the success of this massive Allied operation. Flying incredibly perilous clandestine 'Spy Shuttle' operations, unarmed Lysanders were flown on nights where they could rely on the light of the moon, carrying up to 3 agents, or 'operatives', into enemy occupied France and often bringing others back on the return flight. These operations were vital in providing the Allies with intelligence information and disrupting German activities right across Europe but were incredibly perilous for those involved particularly as they were taking place right under the noses of the Germans. One of the most unusual Lysanders to ever take part in these famous clandestine operations, this aircraft was flown by pilot 'Lucky' Newhouse and sported D-Day identification markings around its rear fuselage, but significantly, not on its wings. A rather unique aircraft, squadron records show that Newhouse flew this Lysander for the first time on the night of 4/5th August 1944 during 'Operation Scimitar', where he landed in France delivering three agents, bringing back another three on the return flight back to England. Even with the addition of D-Day markings, these nocturnal Lysanders were unusual in that they often came under fire from both enemy and friendly forces, so secretive were their important missions.

Its original design featured a huge 6-71 supercharger fitted to the exposed engine giving the car so much horsepower that the TV cast found it hard to control! Later, this setup was reduced to a mock supercharger mounted over the stock Pontiac engine.Two Monkeemobiles were constructed — #1 was used on the TV show. #2 was built as a back-up car and stunt car if needed. Its main job would be the show car circuit of the 60s. Rolls Royce Sedance de Ville in Yellow and Black - James Bond 007 - Goldfinger (1964) One of James Bond's most memorable foes was Auric Goldfinger, 'the man with the Midas touch', and the owner of this iconic Rolls Royce Sedance de Ville. Driven by Oddjob, his deadly Korean manservant, the car formed a crucial part of Goldfinger's plans as a smuggler, with parts of the vehicle recast from melted down gold bullion. This enabled Goldfinger to move the precious metal across borders undetected. The passenger compartment remained the height of luxury and concealed a pull-down table where Goldfinger begrudgingly signed a £5,000 cheque to Bond - his prize for winning their game of golf. The Rolls Royce Sedance de Ville was the first vehicle in the company portfolio to be powered by a twelve-cylinder engine that weighed in at over 7,000 pounds and was capable of cruising at over 100 miles an hour. This vehicle's numberplate AU 1 is reference to the chemical symbol for gold on the periodic table.

"It's just something about the X-pipe Boom Tube exhaust and the individual throttle bodies that give it a wild sound," Ben Grasso says. "This car started with a dream that the ugly duckling of Mopars could become something spectacular," "I wanted to build a car like Dodge would have if the consideration of mass production and government interjection didn't exist, and I think I've achieved that," Ben says proudly. Most people start a shop with the intention of building supercars like this one. Ben had it a little backward, or forward, depending on how you look at it. The car had been bounced around friends' houses for storage for over seven years when Ben decided to tackle this build. Originally wearing purple paint, this Coronet inspired the name and theme of his new business, Plum Floored Creations. He specializes in Mopar muscle rejuvenated with modern powerplants, suspensions, and electronics. Beyond all the bells and whistles installed throughout the engine bay, interior, and undercarriage, the most impressive modifications lie beneath the paint. Ben started off with a stock-bodied car, that needed a little help. The guys from Year One came to the rescue with fresh quarter-panels, a rear window filler, and trunk floor. This sheetmetal freshening gave Ben a clear vision of the car's potential. Coupled with Plum Floored Creations, Paintshop101 gave the Super Bee a whole new flair with a relocated and heightened hood scoop, Coronet R/T-inspired side scoops, and most striking, the modified front fascia.

McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2 XV466 D, No.1435Flight RAF - Falkland Islands, 1991 Features Include:• Detailed crew figures• Drop Tank• Opening Canopy • Optional Armaments • Flight stand• Optional landing gear In the years following the end of the Falklands War, Britain attempted to calm ongoing tensions by reducing the number of Phantom interceptors based on the Islands to just four aircraft. This development reduced the squadron to ‘Flight’ status and would herald its adoption of the famous ‘1435 Flight’ name and its heritage from the Second World War. Now having just four Phantoms to defend the Islands against the potential might of a combined Argentinean air threat, pilots and crew of No.1435 Flight called upon the glorious WWII heritage of this famous unit and established a South Atlantic aviation story which continues to this day. The long association between the Falkland Islands and RAF No.1435 Flight began on 1st November 1988, when No.23(F) Squadron back in the UK started to re-equip with the new Tornado F.3 interceptor. With their Falklands based detachment now reduced to just four Phantoms, the flight drew on its association with the siege of Malta during the Second World War and the defiant defence mounted by a small number of obsolete Gloster Sea Gladiator fighters of the Hal Far Fighter Flight. During her time with No.1435 Flight on the Falkland Islands, Phantom FGR.2 XV466 earned a reputation as one of the most attractively presented RAF jets of the post war era, with her white tail and large Maltese Cross cutting quite the figure as she helped to deter further conflict in this volatile region.

In its C-6 variant configuration, the Junkers had been optimised for the heavy fighter role, easily making the transition to supporting the Luftwaffe's nightfighter force. Initially, single-engined fighters were used to defend German territory at night, however, due to the limitations of the German night defence network, they had neither the range nor firepower to pose a serious threat to British night intruders. The Junkers Ju 88, however, was a very different proposition, with its size, speed and firepower making this the consummate nocturnal hunter and many a Bomber Command aircraft would fall prey to their guns. The Luftwaffe airfield at Catania on Sicily was the principle airfield in the region and was used as the staging point for many Axis airborne operations across the Mediterranean and into North Africa. The airfield was also home to the nightfighting Junkers Ju 88 heavy fighters of I./NJG2, even though their fighters were regularly deployed across the entire Mediterranean Theatre. This aircraft was recalled to Catania during the Summer of 1942, presumably to provide night defence support for the proposed Axis invasion of Malta, as increased Allied night air incursions were expected.

Tiger 131 - restored and operated by The Tank Museum, BovingtonAs you might expect with one of the world's most famous restored military artifacts of the Second World War, the story of 'Tiger 131' and how she came to reside in a museum in rural Dorset is a fascinating one and draws visitors from all over the world to come and see this once feared 80 year old German tank. Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger I turret number 131 was built at the Henschel tank works in Kassel during February 1943 and was destined to be one of only a handful of these mighty tanks sent to bolster Afrika Korps forces who were battling to stem the Allied tide in Tunisia. Assigned to the 504th Heavy Tank Battalion, she was sent by rail to the port town of Trapani in Sicily, before being shipped across the Mediterranean Sea to Tunis. Once in Tunisia, this now famous Tiger was prepared for combat and as the Commander's Tank of the 3rd platoon, was given the red turret number 131. Joining up with what few existing Tigers remained in the area, the tank went into action against the British in April 1943, where she would face the Churchill tanks of the 48th RTR and determined ground forces, which at that time were very much in the ascendancy.

Northrup P61 Black Widow - "Lady in the Dark"Postage Stamp CollectionThe Northrup P61 Black Widow is a twin-engine, twin-boom fighter aircraft manufactured by Northrup Corporation. It was used by United States Army Air Forces USAAF squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945.
