Their quality and detail garnered the attention of the rich and famous across the United States in the early 20th century. One such vehicle stood above the rest—the 1935 Duesenberg SSJ Speedster. With a shorter wheelbase than the J and SJ models, plus a supercharged straight-8 with double overhead cams, it produced more than 400hp, launching the car to 140mph!Only two SSJ Speedsters were ever actually built. The first was painted gray-on-gray and owned by actor Gary Cooper. The second was a red and metallic green Speedster lent to Clark Gable, an established Duesenberg customer in 1936. Both of these Duesenbergs were identical, except for their colors. As expensive and rare as these cars were, Cooper and Gable were actually known to race their cars in the Hollywood hills! The flathead V8 was upped to 255 CID and now producing 110 horsepower—slightly more power than the also newly designed 1949 Ford Coupe. A new overdrive system was optional, activated by a handle under the dash. The Mercury Eight used full instrumentation found in round dials, two on either side of the large central speedometer, and an optional eight-tube radio and electric clock were centered on the dashboard. The styling of the Mercury Eight, when it was released in 1949, adopted the “pontoon” appearance, and was successful in both ending the monotony of warmed-over pre-war style, and differentiating Mercury from its comparable Ford cousin, a trick that spelled sales success. Kenneth M Taylor - Wheeler Field, Pearl Harbor Raid - 7th December, 1941Wingspan 6.2"Having been posted to the US Army Air Corps’ 47th Pursuit Squadron at Wheeler Field on Honolulu Island in April 1941, Second Lieutenant Kenneth Taylor quickly showed his flying abilities and was given the position of flight commander soon after his arrival. In late November, the 47th Pursuit Squadron and their Curtiss P-40B fighters were sent to nearby Haleiwa Field for aerial gunnery exercises, shooting at flag targets and perfecting their aim. At the end of a busy period, Taylor and his squadron mate friend George Welch were granted weekend leave, so on the evening of 6th December and wearing full black tie dress, they headed for the Officers Club at Hickham Field, expecting a ‘real good time’. In the morning, while still sleeping off the effects of the previous night, the pair woke to the sound of low flying aeroplanes, explosions and machine gun fire - Wheeler Field was under attack. Pulling on their tuxedo trousers, Taylor rang ahead to Haleiwa and told them to prepare his and Welch’s fighters, before jumping in his Buick and traveling the ten minutes to the airfield at high speed. Immediately taking to the air and heading back towards Wheeler, the pair chased the Japanese aircraft towards Pearl Harbor, raking any aircraft which entered their sights with machine gun fire.

Panther Tank – Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Ausf D, Unknown Unit, Northern Bavaria, April 1945, Defense of the ReichWidely regarded as the finest German tank of the Second World War, the PzKpfw V Panther was a formidable combination of speed, manoeuvrability, armor protection and firepower, making this a feared battlefield adversary. Built in response to combat experiences on the Eastern Front and the impressive performance of the latest Soviet tanks, Russia would also see the combat introduction of the new Panther, during the battle of Kursk in the summer 1943. Although classed by the Germans as a medium tank, the Panther weighed in at an impressive 45 tons, but proved to be significantly more mobile than its size suggests and after overcoming initial service introduction issues, the Panther began to show its destructive potential. One criticism of the larger German tank designs was that they tended to be over-engineered and while they were undoubtedly impressive fighting machines, there simply were not enough of them with front line units. By the time of D-Day, the Panther was fighting a losing battle and if superior numbers of Allied tanks didn’t get them, rocket firing Hawker Typhoons undoubtedly would.

Concorde British Airways- Corgi Showcase SeriesA true icon of the aviation world, the BAe/Aerospatiale Concorde was the result of an Anglo-French collaboration to produce a supersonic transport aircraft to provide a blue riband service for the rich and famous, whilst possessing performance which would put most military fighter aircraft to shame. With a cruising speed of 1350 mph, more than twice the speed of sound, the fastest transatlantic crossing made by a Concord occurred on 7th February 1996, when the flight from New York to London was completed in a time of 2 hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds. During supersonic flight, Concorde was subjected to such extreme temperatures that the fuselage would expand by between 6 and 10 inches. In the end, only Air France and British Airways would operate Concorde commercially and, even though only 20 aircraft were built, they continue to be regarded as some of the most important and technologically advanced aircraft in the history of powered flight. Designed by R.J. Mitchell and produced by Supermarine, the Spitfire was designed with remarkably thin elliptical wings with the thinnest possible cross-section, which enabled it to travel at speeds that exceeded those of other aircraft fighters of its time. Equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and 8 x 0.303" Browning machine guns, the Spitfire was a fast and maneuverable fighter and was the only fighter aircraft to be in continual production and development before, during and after the war.During the Battle of Britain, which was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces, the Spitfire was part of an important battle tactic, where the Spitfire squadrons were sent up to engage the German fighter escorts, leaving the Hurricane to attack the German bombers. The spitfire Mk IIa, serial P7966 D-B "Manxman" was the aircraft of Wing Commander Douglas Bader, a RAF Fighter Ace, when he started leading the Tangmere Wing in March of 1941. The P7966 was one of the first to carry CO Bader's initials on the fuselage instead of standard code markings. This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:93 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 3 3/4 inches long with 4 3/4 inch wingspan.
