It is the main attraction of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, opened to the public in 1988 by Lincolnshire farmers Fred and Harold Panton as a memorial to their older brother who died during the war. It is currently undergoing restoration to full flying status.

In November 1941 he was promoted to the post of commander of the Luftwaffe's Fighter Arm, and a year later he was promoted to major general, becoming at age 30 the youngest general in the German armed forces.
