The story begins on March 22, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, with the birth of Alex Xydias. Although his father was a prominent producer of silent movies, Alex's childhood was fairly normal, and like most young boys, he naturally gravitated towards automobiles. His first hot rod, a '29 Ford roadster with a milled head and a chopped flywheel, which he drove to Fairfax High School, was paid for with part-time earnings. Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant were at the wheel asthey had been during the historic winning effort at Le Mans. Gurney set the fastest GT qualifying timeduring the race. Unfortunately, a broken tail shaft on the transmission put the car out of the raceduring the 2nd hour. This Daytona would go down infamy by having the unique distinction of carrying the famous DanGurney for President stickers on the rear fenders of the car. The only time that this ever happened!The candidacy was initiated and supported by the ever popular Car and Driver magazine.
