Northrup P61 Black Widow - "Lady in the Dark"Postage Stamp CollectionThe Northrup P61 Black Widow is a twin-engine, twin-boom fighter aircraft manufactured by Northrup Corporation. It was used by United States Army Air Forces USAAF squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945. This die-cast metal, model airplane comes in 1/120 scale with plastic stand. No gear. Model is approximately 4 3/4 inches long with 6 1/2 inch wingspan.

It was considered the most advanced structural design and aerodynamics of the time, with a low-wing, leading edge slats, a closed cockpit and retractable landing gears. It is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 airframes produced from 1936 up to April 1945.German Ace Adolf Galland flew the Bf 109 during the campaign against France in 1940 and was commander of Fighter Wing JG62 during the Battle of Britain, by the end of which he had destroyed 58 enemy planes. In November 1941 he was promoted to the post of commander of the Luftwaffe's Fighter Arm, and a year later he was promoted to major general, becoming at age 30 the youngest general in the German armed forces.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt "Snafu"Postage Stamp CollectionThis Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:100 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 4 1/4 inches long with 4 3/4 inch wingspan. The P-47 Thunderbolt was a fighter-bomber used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Over 15,000 planes were built during its operational lifetime. With the aid of drop tanks (auxiliary fuel tanks), the P-47 could cover long distances and was feared because of its eight .50 caliber guns. The P-47 was the heaviest single engine WWII fighter and the first piston powered fighter to exceed 500 mph.This P-47 has been painted to represent "Snafu" as flown by the 78th Fighter Group stationed in England in late 1944 to battle enemy Luftwaffe fighters and provide escort to Allied heavy bombers. It has been restored to its wartime condition by The Fighter Collection, a private operator of airworthy vintage military aircraft based at historic Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire, UK.

It set numerous world records, including both airspeed and altitude records, and was the first aircraft to have held both records simultaneously.Aircraft 56-901 served with the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. This aircraft set the altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C reaching 92,000 feet at a speed of 2.5 Mach while stationed in Hahn Germany with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1962.Aircraft 56-901 is currently on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT.

It was used extensively in World War II in every branch of the American armed forces.The B-24J Liberator “Witchcraft” entered World War II in April, 1944 and was assigned to the 467th Bomb Group, 790 Bomb Squadron. “Witchcraft” flew an amazing record of 130 combat missions during World War II. The number proudly displayed on its nose art. It has the proud history of always completing her mission, and never had any crewmen injured or killed. The Collings Foundation currently operates a fully restored B-24 in “Witchcraft” colors, in honor of the veterans of the World War II. It is the only fully authentic B-24J aircraft still flying, the star of the Wings of Freedom Flight Experience Tour that visits over 100 cities nationwide.
