Each new year added more convenience, like the independent front suspension and pocketed taillights for more clearance in a loading dock. Each generation brought a sportier look, rounding off the edges of this working man’s truck. By 1978, Dodge was adding models with special graphics and trim that were considered “lifestyle” pickups marketed as specialty, personal-use trucks. The 1980 D150 Dodge Adventurer Sport model was a continuation of these trends. It had plenty of power with its 2.6 liter engine carbureted with the MCA-JET system. Cheering on NASCAR had become an American pastime. However, the rock stars behind the wheel were essentially piloting the very same cars that enthusiasts could buy at their local dealership. Edward Glenn “Fireball” Roberts Jr. was one such driver. His 1962 season was one for the record books. Of his 206 career races, he finished in the top-5 just shy of half the time, and in the top-10 nearly 60% of the time! In 1962, he won both the Daytona 500 and the Firecracker 250 driving a black and gold Pontiac built by the award-winning Smokey Yunick, and sponsored by Jim Stephens Pontiac of Daytona Beach.To commemorate his astounding season, Stephens Pontiac developed the 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix “Fireball” Roberts Edition. It was painted rich Starlight Black with the same gold accents as Roberts’ winning racer. Under the hood was the dealer-installed 421ci powerplant. Only about 30 of these historic and rare cars were ever produced by the dealership!

In this case, no political figure was stepping down but rather Pontiac's sportster of the same name. "He wanted one his whole life but couldn't swing it financially,' recalls his wife, Mary. "Realizing this would be his last chance to get one, he figured he should get moving." In April of 1971, the lovebirds swung by Hansord Pontiac, in Minneapolis, only to be greeted with a terrible announcement: they were too late. "The sales staff said sadly we had missed the boat in getting in an order,' recalls Mary. Officially, the Judge was discontinued in February and here it was nearly a month later. "We told them we weren't interested anymore and started to leave,' said Mary. "Before we could get to the door, they said they would call up Pontiac and ask if they'll make one more." Further pressing their luck, the Hagens had a special request: the car needed to be painted in their favorite color, Orbit Orange. "We had to have one in that color, we just loved it,' gushed Mary. The D series was a line of pickup trucks that was sold by Dodge from 1961 to 1980, over three distinct generations. The list of changes Dodge made to the D Series was extensive, and included both substantial mechanical upgrades as well as smaller features that could be added together to create overall pleasant experience.The custom-truck scene blossomed into a lifestyle on the West Coast, with trucks of all types used to haul cool toys. Dodge capitalized on this trend by creating adult toys with special graphics packages across many of their vehicle lines. This particular black exterior body includes the traditional Utiline bed and custom trim referred to as Gradated Sport Stripes.
