It was used by United States Army Air Forces USAAF squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945. Junkers Ju 87 StukaPostage Stamp CollectionThe Junkers JU 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft used during World War II. With its distinctive gull wings, spatted undercarriage and mounted wailing sirens, dubbed the "Jericho Trumpet", the Stuka was instrumental in the early blitzkrieg victories of the war and became a symbol of German air-power. The Stuka had a 2-man crew that would drop bombs with astonishing accuracy. They had innovative dive brakes to slow the dive and give the pilot more time to aim his bomb, with automatic pull-up in case of g-induced blackout. Although the Stukas were very effective against ground and naval targets and were used throughout the war, they proved no match against faster enemy fighters. This JU 87 was used mainly as a low-altitude ground attack aircraft towards the end of the war and surrendered at Furth in May, 1945

Hawker Hurricane III - RAF Postage Stamp CollectionThe Hawker Hurricane is a British fighter aircraft made by Hawker Aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Hurricane entered squadron service in 1937 and was the workhorse of Britain's air defense during World War II. It became renowned during the Battle of Britain, accounting for 60 percent of the RAF air victories in the battle.The Mk.IID was the tropicalized version mainly used in North Africa after the entry of Italy in the war. Although outclassed in the air by the Luftwaffe's Me-109 and Italy's MC.202, the Hurricane retained an edge in ground-attack role due to its impressive armament. They became well known as the aircraft of the famous Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group flying for the Chinese Air Force against the Japanese. P-40s were used by the Air Forces of 28 nations and gained reputation for durability and toughness.The P-40 was the main USAAF fighter aircraft in the Pacific Ocean theater during the early stages of World War II. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, most of the USAAF's P-40s were destroyed in the initial attack. However, a few P-40s managed to get in the air and shoot down several Japanese aircraft, most notably by George Welch and Kenneth Taylor.

Developed to United States Army Air Corps specifications, the P-38J had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle bearing the pilot and armament. The P-38J was a formidable fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft and was also used extensively as a long-range escort fighter. The Lightning's greatest assets were her twin engines, long range, heavy payload, high speed, fast climb and concentrated firepower. The P-38J 23 Skidoo is one of the few Lightings in flying condition. It was restored in July, 1988 with markings of WWII Capt. Perry Dahl's Lightning while he was fighting in the Pacific front. 23 Skidoo is a saying from the 1920s, which refers to "getting out while the getting's good". It is currently based out of the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.

A-1H Skyraider - US Navy - Papoose Flight Postage Stamp CollectionThe Douglas A-1 Skyraider is a piston-powered, propeller driven military attack aircraft that was operated by the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force untill the early 1970s. The A-1 Skyraider had excellent low-speed maneuverability and carried a large amount of ordnance with long loiter capabilities that made it competitive against jet-powered airplanes.Lt. j.g. W. Thomas Patton was part of four VA-176 Skyraiders that launched off from USS Intrepid flying as "Papoose Flight". On October 9, 1966 as part of a search and rescue mission they encountered four North Vietnamese MiG-17 jet fighters. Using low-speed maneuverability and their four 20mm cannon effectively, they were credited with one MiG-17 destroyed by Patton's A-1H Skyraider "Papoose 409", and two others destroyed or damaged by his squadron mates.

A-6 Intruder - VA-52 KnightridersPostage Stamp CollectionThe A-6 Intruder was a carrier-based twin Jet-engine all weather attack aircraft operated by the US Navy and Marine Corps between 1963 and 1997. A-6 intruders first saw action during the Vietnam War, where the aircraft's long range and heavy payload coupled with its ability to fly in all-weather made it invaluable during the war. The Intruder's side by side seating enhanced its ability to fulfill its typical mission profile of flying low to deliver its payload. The intruder used vastly upgraded navigation and attack systems and advanced radar to navigate through mountain valleys at low levels in order to minimize the aircraft's risk from enemy radar-guided missles. The VA-52 Knightriders were proud operators of the Intruder from November 1967 to December 1994. F4 Phantom II Jolly Rogers VFA-84Postage Stamp Collection The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is regarded as one of the most successful fighter designs of all time. It is a two-seat twinjet long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy. With top speed more than twice the speed of sound, the F-4 established 16 speed, altitude, and time-to-climb records. An all-around performer, the F-4 Phantom was the first aircraft to be simultaneously used by the USAF, USN and USMC, while also serving in approximately 11 other countries.The Jolly Rogers have always displayed some of the most recognizable squadron markings in the world: sinister white skull-and-crossbones on all-black tails, named for flags flown by pirate ships about to attack. Fighter Squadron 84 (VF-84) adopted the Jolly Roger nickname in 1960. They flew the F-4 Phantom starting in 1964 until they were transitioned to the F-14's.

But it was more famous as a tough bird that brought its pilots home, including three celebrated Korean War pilots: Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams and future astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong.

It was a single-engined carrier fighter with permanently mounted wing tip fuel tanks, armed with four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannons and a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions.Blue-tail fly is a term popularized in the Southern folk song "Jimmy Crack Corn". When the tail on Lt. Richard Clinite's all-aluminum Panther sustained heavy flak damage it was replaced with the tail from a damaged blue-painted Panther giving Lt. Richard Clinite's plane it's distinctive look. He successfully flew several missions on this plane until it was so badly hit by flak that it was permanently grounded for major repair.

Boeing P-26 PeashooterPostage Stamp CollectionThe Boeing P-26 was the first American all-metal production fighter aircraft. It entered squadron service in 1933 and was the first pursuit monoplane used by the US Army Air Corps. Popularly known as the "Peashooter," the monoplane had an open cockpit, fixed landing gears and her wings were braced with wire rather than rigid struts, so the airplane was lighter and had less drag. Acclaimed by pilots for its speed and maneuverability, the small but feisty P-26 formed the core of pursuit squadrons throughout the United States.This P-26 Peashooter was based at Selfridge Field in Michigan and the Fairfield Air Depot in Ohio from 1934 until 1938. In 1938 is was transferred to serve at the Canal Zone and served until 1948 at which time the U.S. Army Air Corps gave the aircraft to the Guatemalan Air Force. It continued to serve the Guatemalan Air Force from 1943 to 1954. In 1957 the government of Guatemala donated this P-26 Peashooter to the Smithsonian Institution. The airplane was restored by the U.S. Air Force in the colors of the 34th Attack Squadron that was stationed at March Field, California. This restored P-26 Peashooter is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.
