The biggest change was the cutting back of performance options due to the Clean Air Act of 1970 which slowed down the muscle car craze, but it didn’t stop there. From the 1972 Plymouth B-body lineup, a Road Runner with a 440 was considered top-of-the-line. In the U.S. and Canada, a total of 672 Plymouth Road Runner GTXs were produced in 1972. From that, 453 were automatics and 219 were four-speeds. For the first time ever, Auto World is proud to bring you this 1972 Plymouth Road Runner in FE5 Rallye Red with tank track stripes. Adding to its distinction, this 1969 Shelby GT-500 is fully-documented as one of the first 100 built. Under the hood is the original Cobra Jet V8 with the VIN to match. Specific to the Shelby is the fiberglass body panels, front bumper, grille, headlights, and 5-scoop NACA duct hood. Built at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan, it is thought to be 1 out of 108 GS 455 Stage 1 Buick cars that were painted Burgundy Mist with a white roof. That number includes automatics. It’s also 1 out of only 193 Stage 1 models with a 4-speed that sported the optional air conditioner. Peek at the interior, and you’ll find all-white seats, matching door panels, black carpeting, and a detailed dash.Although in pristine condition, this wasn’t always the case as this gem was hidden away in a shop for a 5-year restoration project. Not for nothing, that long journey paid off. Still with all its original metal, and even better than before, it was entered into the 2021 MCACN show where it scored the emerald-level award with the highest points for a stock Buick. Most interestingly, this exceptional muscle machine is the only one known to still exist. It rolls on four Rally wheels with redline polyglass tires.
