Consolidated PBY-5A CatalinaPostage Stamp CollectionProduced by Consolidated Aircraft, the PBY Catalina was a flying boat which later became an amphibious aircraft, used by several countries in the 1930's and 1940's. It is a long range aircraft, which did not require a runway to operate, as it was capable of both take-off and landing on the water. The PBY's uses included maritime patrol, bombing, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue missions. Remembered for their role in rescuing downed airmen, the PBY saved thousands of lives. Catalina airmen referred to their aircraft as the "Cat" on combat missions and "Dumbo" during air-sea rescue. The name Black Cats refers to a select group of squadrons whose mission it was to strike at night. Painting their aircraft matte black, installing special radar and flame dampers over the exhaust ports, and often using only the lights on their instrument gauges to guide them, these squadrons were virtually undetectable at night. Northrup P61 Black Widow - "Lady in the Dark"Postage Stamp CollectionThe Northrup P61 Black Widow is a twin-engine, twin-boom fighter aircraft manufactured by Northrup Corporation. It was used by United States Army Air Forces USAAF squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945. This die-cast metal, model airplane comes in 1/120 scale with plastic stand. No gear. Model is approximately 4 3/4 inches long with 6 1/2 inch wingspan.

Junkers Ju 87 StukaPostage Stamp CollectionThe Junkers JU 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft used during World War II. With its distinctive gull wings, spatted undercarriage and mounted wailing sirens, dubbed the "Jericho Trumpet", the Stuka was instrumental in the early blitzkrieg victories of the war and became a symbol of German air-power. The Stuka had a 2-man crew that would drop bombs with astonishing accuracy. They had innovative dive brakes to slow the dive and give the pilot more time to aim his bomb, with automatic pull-up in case of g-induced blackout. Although the Stukas were very effective against ground and naval targets and were used throughout the war, they proved no match against faster enemy fighters. This JU 87 was used mainly as a low-altitude ground attack aircraft towards the end of the war and surrendered at Furth in May, 1945

Its excellent capabilities and performance made it very successful for the USMC. The F4U had a long production life span and was last produced in 1952. It had a max speed of 417 mph and carried six .50 caliber machine guns or four 20mm cannons, as well as a pair of 2000 lb. bombs and air rockets.F4U aircraft #86 was piloted by Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, Commanding Officer of the VMF-214 "Black Sheep" Squadron who fought their way to fame in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Flying out of their home airfield out of Vella Lavella, the "Black Sheep" piled up a record 203 planes destroyed or damaged, troop transports and supply ships sunk, and ground installations destroyed in their first 84 days. Boyington himself claims a record 28 total kills. He was shot down on January 3, 1944 and was a prisoner of war for 20 months until the Japanese surrender. He was awarded both the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross on October, 1945. The mid-1970s television show "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was very loosely based on his memoirs.

F4 Phantom II Jolly Rogers VFA-84Postage Stamp Collection The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is regarded as one of the most successful fighter designs of all time. It is a two-seat twinjet long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy. With top speed more than twice the speed of sound, the F-4 established 16 speed, altitude, and time-to-climb records. An all-around performer, the F-4 Phantom was the first aircraft to be simultaneously used by the USAF, USN and USMC, while also serving in approximately 11 other countries.The Jolly Rogers have always displayed some of the most recognizable squadron markings in the world: sinister white skull-and-crossbones on all-black tails, named for flags flown by pirate ships about to attack. Fighter Squadron 84 (VF-84) adopted the Jolly Roger nickname in 1960. They flew the F-4 Phantom starting in 1964 until they were transitioned to the F-14's.

NASA Lockheed YF-12Postage Stamp CollectionThe YF-12 was an experimental fighter-interceptor version of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft. YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. F9F Panther Silver/Black Postage Stamp Collection The F9F Panther was Grumman's first jet-powered aircraft and was used extensively by the US Navy and Marine Corps as their primary fighter and ground-attack aircraft in the Korean War. It was a single-engined carrier fighter with permanently mounted wing tip fuel tanks, armed with four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannons and a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions.Blue-tail fly is a term popularized in the Southern folk song "Jimmy Crack Corn". When the tail on Lt. Richard Clinite's all-aluminum Panther sustained heavy flak damage it was replaced with the tail from a damaged blue-painted Panther giving Lt. Richard Clinite's plane it's distinctive look. He successfully flew several missions on this plane until it was so badly hit by flak that it was permanently grounded for major repair.

Consolidated PBY-5A - Black Cat - RAAF Postage Stamp Collection This Die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:150 scale with plastic stand. Catalina A24-88 was delivered to the RAAF in March 1944 as a PBY-5A, and served with 42 Squadron as RK-A from August 1944 through to July 1945 in the South East Pacific operations as a "Black Cat" on sea mining missions. A24-88 most famous mission was to take part in the longest Black Cat mining mission of the War, to mine Manila Harbour in December 1944 to bottle up the Japanese fleet ahead of the landings in the Philippines by General MacArthur.A24-88 was transferred to 11 Squadron on August 1st 1945 and remained with that squadron to the end of the war. On January 10th 1946 A24-88 was allocated to 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot at Lake Boga, Victoria for storage and disposal.January 1948 the hulk of A24-88 was sold for scrap but instead was stripped of it's engines, wings, and tail and converted to a house boat on the Murray River where it served for over 30 years in the Echuca area. Catalina PBY A24-88 (RK A) hulk was acquired by the Australian National Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Victoria and is currently awaiting restoration.A24-88 is the last surviving RAAF Black Cat, the sole surviving RAAF PBY-5A model of 46 delivered, and the only survivor of the 29 locally modified PBY-5A (M) aircraft converted from Amphibian to Flying Boat.
