North American F-86 Sabre "Mig Mad Marine"Postage Stamp CollectionDie-cast metal plane iwth plastic stand The F-86 Sabre is the United States' first swept wing jet-fighter. Produced by North American Aviation it was used extensively against the Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed aerial dogfights during the Korean War (1950–1953). Considered one of the best and most important fighter aircraft in that war, the F-86 is also rated highly in comparison with fighters of its generation. Although it was developed in the late 1940s and outdated by the end of the '50s, the Sabre proved versatile and adaptable. Aircraft continued to serve as a front-line fighter in numerous air forces until 1990’s.The F-86 Sabre "MIG MAD MARINE" was Maj. John Glenn’s jet-fighter. John Herschel Glenn, Jr. was a U.S. Marine Corps pilot who flew with the U.S. Air Force’s 51st Fighter Wing as an exchange pilot. He actually named his assigned aircraft “Lyn Annie Dave” for his wife and two kids but did not see much action. The flight crew surprised him with a new paint job, a big red M with letters trailing off it to read "MIG MAD MARINE" to change his luck. He shot down three MiGs near the Yalu River in the last 2 weeks of the war. After Korean War John Glenn (Colonel. USMC. Ret.) went on to be a test pilot, an astronaut and US Senator.

NASA Lockheed YF-12Postage Stamp CollectionThe YF-12 was an experimental fighter-interceptor version of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft. YF-12s were used in a joint Air Force-NASA research program to study the thermal, structural, and aerodynamic effects of sustained, high-altitude flights. The YF-12 was fabricated primarily from titanium alloy and was painted flat black, which enabled it to withstand high stresses in altitude and temperatures over 500°F. The YF-12 set a speed record of 2,070.101 mph and an altitude record of 80,257.65 feet in 1965. It was never adopted by the military as an operational aircraft. It was, however, a precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane. The only YF-12 left in existence is currently displayed at the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.This die-cast metal model comes in 1:200 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 6 3/16 inches long with 3 3/16 inch wingspan.

Boeing P-26 PeashooterPostage Stamp CollectionThe Boeing P-26 was the first American all-metal production fighter aircraft. It entered squadron service in 1933 and was the first pursuit monoplane used by the US Army Air Corps. Popularly known as the "Peashooter," the monoplane had an open cockpit, fixed landing gears and her wings were braced with wire rather than rigid struts, so the airplane was lighter and had less drag. Acclaimed by pilots for its speed and maneuverability, the small but feisty P-26 formed the core of pursuit squadrons throughout the United States. This P-26 Peashooter was based at Selfridge Field in Michigan and the Fairfield Air Depot in Ohio from 1934 until 1938. In 1938 is was transferred to serve at the Canal Zone and served until 1948 at which time the U.S. Army Air Corps gave the aircraft to the Guatemalan Air Force. It continued to serve the Guatemalan Air Force from 1943 to 1954. In 1957 the government of Guatemala donated this P-26 Peashooter to the Smithsonian Institution. The airplane was restored by the U.S. Air Force in the colors of the 34th Attack Squadron that was stationed at March Field, California. This restored P-26 Peashooter is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

Curtiss JN4 "Jenny" - USAASPostage Stamp CollectionDie-cast model with a plastic stand The JN-4 "Jenny" was a single-engine, 2-seater biplane built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company as a training aircraft for the US Army. Curtiss combined the best features of the model J and model N trainers, and developed the JN or "Jenny". It was widely used during World War I to train beginning pilots, but its more significant role in aviation history was as a barnstorming and mail-carrying airplane in the 1920s.Thousands of Jennys were sold at surplus prices to private owners in the years after the war and helped awaken the US to civil aviation through much of the 1920s. The Smithsonian acquired this Jenny in 1918 directly from the U.S. War Department. It is currently on static display at National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia
